Myopia Management

Myopia (nearsightedness) is becoming more common in children and teens. If your child’s prescription is changing year after year, you are not alone. At Insight Optometry in Halifax, we offer myopia management to help slow progression and support long term eye health.

Myopia management is not just stronger glasses. It is a plan that corrects vision now while also monitoring how the eye changes as your child grows.

Why Myopia Management Matters

As myopia increases, long term eye health risks can increase too. That is why early action matters. The goal is simple. Keep vision clear, slow progression when possible, and watch changes closely over time.

Common signs your child may be becoming nearsighted

  • Squinting to see the board or across the room
  • Sitting very close to screens or the TV
  • Headaches or eye strain after schoolwork
  • Complaints that distance vision is blurry
  • Myopia management eyeglasses (MiYOSMART)

MiYOSMART lenses look like regular glasses, but the lens design is made for myopia control and slows myopia progression. This is a great option for kids who prefer glasses or are not ready for contacts.

    • Everyday vision correction with a myopia control lens design
    • Simple routine for most families
  • Myopia management contact lenses (MiSight)

MiSight lenses are soft daily disposable contacts designed for myopia management and slow myopia progression. Many kids and teens love them for sports and activities, and daily disposables keep care straightforward.

    • Single use daily lenses, no cleaning routine
    • Ideal for active kids and teens
  • Orthokeratology (Ortho K)

Ortho K uses custom rigid lenses worn overnight to gently reshape the cornea while your child sleeps. In the morning, patients see clearly during the day without the need for glasses or daytime contacts. Ortho K is used as a myopia management strategy for many children to slow myopia progression.

    • Daytime freedom from glasses and soft contacts
    • Requires careful hygiene and routine follow ups
  • Low dose atropine eye drops

Low dose atropine drops are sometimes used to help slow myopia progression. This option may be recommended alongside glasses or contact lenses, depending on how quickly the myopia is changing.

    • At home routine, usually once per day
    • We review benefits, side effects, and monitoring at every visit
  • Accessibility needs

If you feel comfortable, please let us know if your child has any specific accessibility needs or personal sensitivities before their visit, so we can do our best to make them feel welcome and comfortable during their visit.

FAQ'S

What age should my child start myopia management?

As soon as myopia is diagnosed myopia management should be considered, and especially when we see signs of progressing myopia. Timing depends on your child’s age, prescription, and rate of change.

Will my child still need glasses or contacts?

Yes. To see clearly, glasses or contact lenses are needed. The difference is the type of contact lens/glasses and the strategy that is chosen to help slow progression.

Is Ortho K safe?

Ortho K can be safe when it is properly prescribed and cared for. Like any contact lens, it requires good hygiene and regular check ups.

Do these treatments stop myopia completely?

As children and youth grow, their eyes and visual system and amount of myopia can change. Myopia often increases throughout childhood and adolescence. Myopia management treatments have been shown to slow the progression of myopia and reduce how quickly a child’s prescription increases. However, it’s important to understand that there is currently no treatment that can stop myopia completely.
